History
The McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Joint Base has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. The base was originally established as the Naval Air Station Lakehurst in 1917, and was later renamed the Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst in 1950. During World War II, the base played a critical role in the development and testing of lighter-than-air aircraft.
In 1942, the US Army established Camp Dix, which was later renamed Fort Dix in 1953. The fort was used as a training facility for the Army during World War II, and later served as a basic training facility for the Army during the Vietnam War.
